COVID-19: SOMA Senior Support Fund

As our community takes necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, we want to take special steps to support some of our older residents. Our older South Orange and Maplewood residents are the most vulnerable to this disease . In addition, the many recent cancellations of activities and programs are meant to provide protections, but this can also mean that our seniors are without the services they need including food, shopping, transportation, and medication. We are also developing initiatives to address social isolation in a meaningful way such a “phone a friend”.

With your help, we will be providing our SOMA seniors with financial and logistical assistance as we navigate this uncertain and evolving situation. A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.

COVID-19: SOMA Family Support Fund

As we enact precautions to prevent community coronavirus spread, we want to take special steps to support some of our vulnerable families. With our schools closing, children will be home and shouldn’t be in group settings where they may come into contact with COVID-19. Some of our families don’t have the luxury of working from home or hiring in-home childcare while they continue to work. Some of our families have parents who work in the health care sector and so are needed on the front lines to battle this virus. Hourly wage earners who need to stay home with their children and those that now need paid childcare services will soon face harsh economic realities. We have rallied to provide non-perishable food for these families – no surprise in our giving community; we are creating this fund to also provide financial support.

With your help, we will be providing vulnerable families here in South Orange and Maplewood with financial assistance as we navigate this uncertain and evolving situation. A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.

Front Line Appreciation Group of SOMA

FLAG (Front Line Appreciation Group) of South Orange and Maplewood is a group dedicated to feeding our front line healthcare workers at Newark Beth Israel Hospital during the coronavirus pandemic while also keeping  SOMA restaurants in business.

We’re asking for donations of $10-$20, but more is always welcome.  Funds will be used to purchase meals from SOMA restaurants and distributed to healthcare workers at Newark Beth Israel Hospital.

We now know the extreme stress facing front line hospital workers with this life-threatening virus. Not only are they working in a stressful environment but training on new safety regulations, adhering to rigorous protocols, working long hours, tending to high patient volume, and scarcity of resources. A little extra fuel and love from the community can go a really long way to help them feel appreciated and keep them healthy.

Please share with your distant friends, co-workers and family members and ask them to set up something similar to pay this forward!

FLAG is a joint initiative undertaken by South Orange and Maplewood community volunteers. You can join FLAG on Facebook.

MEND NJ Mobile Food Drive

MEND NJ is coordinating a Mobile Food Drive to help ensure that there is food available for people who need it over the next few weeks. If you have extra food (or cleaning supplies!) to spare, please consider donating them to MEND (they will pick up from your doorstep) for distribution to network of 20 food pantries located throughout Essex County.

Make a mask (or donate supplies)

Many members of our community have started collecting fabric and sewing them into masks that can be used by those in health care spaces who are not taking care of patients with Coronavirus but still may want additional protection. This will allow the professional protective gear to be used exclusively for health care professionals who are at higher risk of exposure. Join SoMA Sewing Volunteers to get involved in this effort!

Please note that this Facebook Group is being run by local volunteers and not the Township.

Join the SOMA SQUAD

Join the SQUAD (SoMA QUarantine Assistance, Delivered) Facebook Group to help your fellow SoMA residents by volunteering to deliver needed items to those who cannot get out to obtain them (or posting a need for an eldery or vulnerable neighbor).

Please note that this Facebook Group is being run by local volunteers and not the Township.

SOMA NJ 3D Printers Alliance

The SOMA NJ 3D Printers Alliance is a group of individuals dedicated to helping supply face visors to frontline workers in the fight against the Coronavirus using 3D printers. Ranging from 6th graders to adults, volunteers are using the designs of Budmen Industries, a printing company based out of New York who made files available including 3D models, templates and assembly instructions for anyone fighting Coronavirus.

Join the Facebook Group SOMA NJ 3D Printers Alliance. If you have a printer, join up and we will add you to the system and provide you with files. If you don’t have a printer but want to contribute, join the group! We need lots of filament, elastic, and weathering strips to keep operations going. If we run out, the entire operation will screech to a halt. #Flattenthecurve
